Man Arrested in Connection to Fatal Scooter Hit-and-Run in San Jose
San Jose, CA — A 33-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a deadly hit-and-run that claimed the life of a San Francisco woman earlier this week, authorities confirmed.
San Jose police say Justin Perez, of San Jose, is facing charges of felony hit-and-run and manslaughter after allegedly striking 52-year-old Monica Ibarra as she rode her electric scooter in a crosswalk. The crash occurred Monday morning around 8 a.m. at the intersection of Santa Clara and Cahill streets.
Ibarra was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she later died from her injuries. Her death marks San Jose’s 24th traffic fatality in 2025.
Police said Perez fled the scene immediately after the collision. The pickup truck involved — a 2021 black Ram — was later found abandoned and determined to have been stolen. Following an investigation, detectives obtained warrants and arrested Perez at his residence.
He is currently being held in Santa Clara County Jail with bail set at $530,000. Perez is scheduled to appear in court on September 15.
