RCMP Investigating Fatal Highway 39 Shooting Near Weyburn
Weyburn, Saskatchewan (September 13, 2025) — A 44-year-old woman from Weyburn was shot and killed Friday night while traveling on Highway 39, prompting an RCMP investigation into what authorities describe as a potentially random act of violence.
Police said the incident occurred at approximately 8 p.m., about three kilometers northwest of Weyburn, near the Richardson Pioneer and Viterra grain terminals. Two women were driving together in a black Ford Explorer toward Weyburn when a loud crack was heard. Investigators determined that a firearm had been discharged, striking the vehicle and hitting the passenger.
The victim died at the scene despite efforts to save her. Her family has since been notified. The driver, also from the Weyburn area, was unharmed and is not considered a suspect.
RCMP Major Crimes is leading the investigation, working alongside Weyburn RCMP and RCMP Forensic Identification Services. At this stage, police believe the shooting may have been random.
“We understand the current circumstances of this investigation may cause concern, particularly for locals and those who travel on Highway 39,” said Inspector Ashley St. Germaine. “We are asking anyone who may have been in the area around 8 p.m. Friday to report suspicious people, vehicles, or activity to police.”
Authorities urge farmers and residents in the area to remain vigilant, lock vehicles, and remove keys. Highway 39 has reopened, though an increased police presence is expected in the Weyburn region throughout the weekend.
Anyone with information is asked to contact RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
