West County Mall Near St. Louis on Lockdown After Reports of Shots Fired
Des Peres, Mo. — West County Center, a popular shopping mall just west of St. Louis, was placed on lockdown Saturday afternoon following reports of shots fired. Police and emergency services rushed to the scene around 2 p.m. after receiving calls of an “active shooter” inside the mall.
Witnesses reported hearing what sounded like multiple gunshots near the food court, where a fight involving seven to eight individuals is believed to have broken out moments before. Several shoppers described seeing people running for cover as chaos erupted. “It was terrifying — people were screaming and trying to hide,” one witness said.
Authorities have not confirmed whether any gunshots were actually fired, and it remains unclear if anyone was struck. As of now, no injuries have been officially reported.
A heavy law enforcement presence quickly surrounded the mall as officers moved inside to clear the building and ensure the safety of those sheltering in place. Many shoppers barricaded themselves inside stores, while others were evacuated in small groups by police.
Fire and EMS crews also staged nearby as a precaution while officials worked to secure the scene. The mall remains under lockdown as the investigation continues.
Police are asking the public to avoid the area until further notice. Updates are expected as investigators piece together what happened and determine whether the loud noises were gunfire or another source.
