Chicago Man Arrested After Woman Fatally Shot and Set on Fire

CHICAGO, IL — Authorities have arrested a 65-year-old man accused of killing Antoinette Congo, 36, in a brutal attack that shocked the Englewood community.

According to the Chicago Police Department (CPD), Gregory Huddson was taken into custody in the Roseland neighborhood just hours after Congo’s body was discovered on September 11. Firefighters responded to a garage fire in the 6500 block of South Damen Avenue, where they found the victim dead. Investigators later determined that Congo had been fatally shot before the fire was set.

Following a swift investigation, police identified Huddson as the suspect. He now faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, arson, kidnapping, and assault.

“This was a horrific act of violence, and our detectives worked around the clock to bring the suspect into custody,” CPD officials said in a statement.

Court records indicate that Huddson is expected to appear before a judge on September 14. If convicted, he could face life in prison.

Neighbors in Englewood expressed shock and sorrow at the crime, calling it a devastating loss for the community. Friends described Congo as a kind and caring woman who did not deserve such a tragic fate.

Authorities continue to investigate the events leading up to the killing, but police emphasized that the swift arrest was made possible through community cooperation and strong investigative efforts.

The case remains ongoing as prosecutors prepare formal proceedings against Huddson.
