8-Year-Old Girl Shot Inside Gresham Home, Police Say

CHICAGO (WLS) β€” An 8-year-old girl was injured Sunday afternoon after being shot inside a South Side home, according to Chicago police.

The incident occurred just before 2 p.m. in the 1400-block of West 83rd Street in the Gresham neighborhood.

Authorities said the child was struck in the finger and was transported to Christ Hospital, where she was listed in good condition.

Details surrounding what led up to the shooting remain unclear. Police have not said whether the girl was the intended target or if the gunfire came from inside or outside the residence.

Neighbors expressed alarm over yet another case of gun violence impacting children. β€œIt’s heartbreaking. Kids should be safe in their own homes, not caught up in this,” one resident told ABC7 off camera.

The shooting adds to a troubling wave of violence across Chicago during the summer and early fall, with police reporting dozens of children struck by gunfire in recent months. Community leaders have repeatedly called for more intervention programs, neighborhood patrols, and stronger efforts to get illegal guns off the streets.

As of Sunday evening, no one was in custody. The investigation has been turned over to Area Two detectives, who are working to piece together the circumstances of the shooting.

Police have urged anyone with information to come forward.
