Newborn Found Alive in North Austin Dumpster; Police Investigating
AUSTIN, Texas — Authorities are investigating after a newborn baby was discovered inside a dumpster at a North Austin apartment complex Saturday afternoon.
According to the Austin Police Department (APD), officers received a 911 call at approximately 1:35 p.m. reporting an infant in the 8600 block of North Lamar Boulevard. When officers arrived, they found a newborn girl alive and showing no signs of distress. She was immediately transported to Dell Children’s Hospital as a precaution and is currently listed in stable condition.
Residents said they were alerted after hearing faint cries coming from the dumpster. Perry Lewis, one of the witnesses, said his neighbor first suspected the sound might be a baby. When Lewis checked, he found the newborn covered in trash and dirt, with her umbilical cord still attached.
Another resident, Lerrssy Frausto, helped retrieve the infant and performed chest compressions before first responders arrived. “The way that she was found — upside down in the trash — broke me,” Frausto said. “I just kept praying for her to stay with me.”
APD Officer Aaron Townsend said detectives are now working to identify the baby’s mother and determine who is responsible. Police have not yet confirmed how long the child was in the dumpster.
Officials say the newborn will likely remain at the hospital while care arrangements are made. The incident remains under investigation, and anyone with information is urged to contact Austin police.
