Heartbreaking: European Prince Dies at Age 22

The tragic passing of Prince Frederik of Luxembourg at the age of 22 has been confirmed in a statement from his father, Prince Robert of Luxembourg. The young royal succumbed to POLG Mitochondrial Disease, a rare genetic disorder that causes progressive organ dysfunction and failure.

Prince Frederik, born on March 18, 2002, was only 14 years old when he was diagnosed with the disease. Despite his health challenges, he became the Founder and Creative Director of the POLG Foundation, dedicating his time to raising awareness and supporting others affected by the disorder.

In a statement posted on the foundation’s website, Prince Robert shared, “It is with a very heavy heart that my wife and I would like to inform you of the passing of our son, The POLG Foundation Founder and Creative Director, Frederik.”

He further revealed that “Although we did not know this, at the time of his birth, Frederik was born with a Rare Disease; POLG Mitochondrial disease.”

The Royals of Luxembourg Instagram page also paid tribute, stating, “Prince Robert of Luxembourg and Princess Julie of Nassau have shared the heartbreaking news through their PolG Foundation that their youngest son, Prince Frederik of Nassau, has tragically passed away.”

The POLG Foundation’s website describes the disease as a condition that “robs the body’s cells of energy, in turn causing progressive multiple organ dysfunction and failure.” The disorder is rare, with little data on how many individuals worldwide are affected.

The Luxembourg royal family is mourning this devastating loss, remembering Prince Frederik not only as their beloved son but also as a passionate advocate for those battling the same disease.
