Tragedy in Queens: Drunk Driver Fatally Strikes 16-Year-Old Girl After Confrontation

A night out in Queens turned deadly early Saturday morning when a 16-year-old girl was fatally struck by an SUV driven by an intoxicated man following a heated altercation.

The victim, identified as Jhoanny Gomez-Alvarez of Manhattan, was leaving Prima Dona on Roosevelt Avenue with her boyfriend, mother, and a family friend around 4 a.m. when tragedy struck. According to police and witnesses, the 38-year-old driver had been sitting outside a neighborhood bar visibly drunk. Moments before the crash, he allegedly made lewd comments toward Gomez-Alvarez, sparking an argument with her family.

The verbal exchange quickly escalated into a confrontation involving the teen’s mother and boyfriend. Shortly after, the suspect got behind the wheel of a 2009 Chevy Suburban. In a horrifying turn of events, he drove directly onto the sidewalk near Benham Street, striking Gomez-Alvarez with deadly force.

Authorities reported that the driver was highly intoxicated at the time of the incident. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but despite efforts to save her, the young victim was pronounced dead.

The suspect was taken into custody, and charges are expected to include vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated.
