Remembering Sue Funnell: Heart and Soul of the Cinque Ports Club

It is with great sadness that the Cinque Ports Club announces the passing of Sue Funnell, a beloved friend and former Steward, after a long illness. Sue served as Steward of the club for nearly 20 years and became nothing short of its heart and soul.

Anyone who spent time at the club will remember Sue’s unmistakable presence. She was known for her warmth, her humor, and her straightforwardness. If you stepped out of line, Sue never hesitated to remind you—whether it was telling you to “take your feet off the chairs” or gently suggesting, “I think it’s time to go.” These moments, often delivered with a smile, made her both respected and loved.

Sue’s energy was at the center of countless memorable events, from children’s Halloween parties with tissue-paper mummies to the annual Members’ Christmas meal. During football World Cup or Euro finals, Sue could always be found in the hall with her air horn, leading the celebrations and blasting “It’s Coming Home” when England scored.

Every member, past and present, has a story to tell about Sue. To honor her memory, the club has opened a Book of Condolence for members to share their favorite memories, stories, and messages of support.

On behalf of the committee, staff, and all members, past and present, the Cinque Ports Club extends heartfelt condolences to Sue’s family. She will be remembered with love and gratitude, and her spirit will remain a cherished part of the club forever.
