Illinois Father Charged After Fatal Shooting of 14-Year-Old Daughter

Monroe County, IL – A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken the Monroe County community after a father was charged in connection with the fatal shooting of his 14-year-old daughter, Emma Schultheis.

According to investigators, the incident occurred on July 21 along State Route 3 in Waterloo. Authorities say 34-year-old David A. Schultheis fired a handgun into a room of a brick building while attempting to shoot a bird. Reports indicate he extended his arm into the room while keeping his head outside, hoping to avoid injury from a ricochet.

The bullet struck the bird before exiting through a window. Tragically, Emma was standing outside and was fatally struck. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

In early September, Monroe County State’s Attorney Ryan Webb announced criminal charges against Schultheis, including reckless discharge of a firearm.

Additionally, Karen A. Schwarze faces charges of concealment of a homicidal death and obstruction of justice, after authorities allege she attempted to hide a firearm and influence witnesses during the investigation.

Schultheis voluntarily surrendered to the Monroe County Jail, where he was booked and later released pending future court dates. Officials confirmed Schwarze is also expected to turn herself in.

The devastating incident has left family, friends, and the wider Waterloo community mourning the loss of a young life. Prosecutors emphasized the case highlights the dangers of careless firearm use and the tragic consequences that can follow in an instant.
