Mississippi Bureau of Investigation Probes Deadly Officer-Involved Shooting in Hancock County
HANCOCK COUNTY, Miss. — The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) is examining a deadly officer-involved shooting that occurred during a rescue operation in Hancock County.
Authorities say deputies were responding to a call for assistance when the suspect — later identified as 51-year-old Willie Carroll of Cypress, Texas — allegedly brandished a firearm. In response, officers opened fire, striking Carroll. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials have not released full details about the events leading up to the incident but confirmed that no law enforcement officers were injured. Standard procedure calls for the MBI to investigate officer-involved shootings to ensure transparency and accountability.
Once the investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the District Attorney’s Office for review. More information, including body camera footage and the results of forensic testing, is expected in the coming weeks.
The incident has sparked renewed discussion about the risks faced by both officers and civilians during high-stakes encounters.
