Mother and Son Killed in Wilson Triple Shooting; Community Leader Arrested

WILSON, N.C. — The Wilson community is reeling after a tragic act of violence claimed the lives of a mother and her son, leaving residents stunned and heartbroken. On Monday afternoon, September 15, police confirmed that 44-year-old Natasha Latrice Sutton and her son, 21-year-old Avante Pender, were fatally shot in the 900 block of Washington Street.

Authorities said the shooting unfolded around 2 p.m., when gunfire erupted outside a residence. Sutton and Pender were struck and later pronounced dead at the hospital. A third victim, 37-year-old Tiffany Fogg, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is recovering at Wilson Medical Center.

Police quickly identified and arrested 39-year-old Donta Maurice Chestnut, the founder of Our Wilson, a nonprofit focused on youth empowerment and mentorship. Chestnut now faces two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder. Sources familiar with the investigation suggest the shooting may have stemmed from a dispute involving an alleged eviction attempt, though the motive has not been formally confirmed.

The arrest of Chestnut — once regarded as a respected community leader — has left many residents grappling with shock and disbelief. Video footage reportedly captured him at the scene during a heated confrontation moments before shots were fired.

Law enforcement has emphasized that the investigation remains active and are urging anyone with information to come forward. As the community mourns, the deaths of Sutton and Pender mark a devastating loss for their family and for Wilson as a whole.
