Wilson Mother and Son Killed in Eviction-Related Shooting

WILSON, N.C. — A mother and her son were fatally shot Monday afternoon in what police describe as a violent confrontation linked to an eviction dispute. Authorities identified the victims as 44-year-old Natasha Latrice Sutton and her son, 21-year-old Avantae Pender, both of Wilson.

The shooting occurred shortly after 2 p.m. in a residential area, where officers responded to multiple reports of gunfire. When police arrived, they found Sutton and Pender suffering from critical gunshot wounds. Despite emergency efforts, both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say the incident unfolded during an eviction process, though details about what led to the shooting remain under investigation. Authorities have not yet released information about the suspect or whether any arrests have been made.

Neighbors described Sutton as a dedicated mother and Pender as a young man full of promise. The sudden loss has left the Wilson community reeling.

“This is an unimaginable tragedy for one family, and a heartbreaking event for our city,” said a Wilson Police Department spokesperson. “We are committed to uncovering exactly what happened and ensuring justice for the victims.”

Police have urged anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. The investigation remains active, and officials say more details will be shared as they become available.

Sutton and Pender’s family members are now left grieving the devastating loss of both a mother and son whose lives were cut short in an act of senseless violence.
