Springdale School District Under Fire After Staffer’s Social Media Post Mocking Charlie Kirk’s Death

Springdale, Arkansas — Marisela Tapia, an ELD (English Language Development) Interventionist at Sonora Middle School, has stirred outrage following social media posts in which she allegedly mocked the recent assassination of conservative public figure Charlie Kirk. In a widely shared post, Tapia reportedly described Kirk’s death as “divine justice” due to his public stance defending the Second Amendment. The post has provoked calls from parents, community members and political commentators for the Springdale Public Schools district to take disciplinary action, including termination.

    Who is Marisela Tapia?
According to the Sonora Middle School staff directory, Marisela Tapia is employed as an ELD Interventionist, a role that supports students who are learning English, helping them access class content and improve literacy in English.

    What’s Happening Now?
The post was shared publicly and quickly spread across platforms, leading to demands for accountability. Critics argue that mocking a violent death — especially one as polarizing as Kirk’s — is deeply inappropriate for someone working with children. Some community voices emphasize that educators carry extra responsibility to model respect and restraint, especially on sensitive political matters.

In response, new information suggests that Marisela Tapia is no longer employed at Sonora Middle School. However, the district has not yet publicly confirmed whether her departure was voluntary, disciplinary, or related to this incident.

Witnesses reported hearing what sounded like multiple gunshots near the food court, where a fight involving seven to eight individuals is believed to have broken out moments before. Several shoppers described seeing people running for cover as chaos erupted. “It was terrifying — people were screaming and trying to hide,” one witness said.

Authorities have not confirmed whether any gunshots were actually fired, and it remains unclear if anyone was struck. As of now, no injuries have been officially reported.

A heavy law enforcement presence quickly surrounded the mall as officers moved inside to clear the building and ensure the safety of those sheltering in place. Many shoppers barricaded themselves inside stores, while others were evacuated in small groups by police.
