Woman Arrested Following Fatal Shooting at Beaufort County Assisted Living Facility

BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities say an 82-year-old woman has been arrested following a fatal shooting Friday morning at a Beaufort County assisted living facility.

According to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a report of shots fired at the Preston Health Center at the Cypress of Hilton Head, located on the 80 block of Birdsong Way.

When deputies arrived, they found Harriett Kay Recker, 82, of Sun City, inside a patient’s room along with her 81-year-old spouse, who was suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite lifesaving efforts by deputies and medical staff, the man succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Recker was taken into custody without incident and is now facing charges of murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. She is being held at the Beaufort County Detention Center.

Authorities have not released the name of the victim, pending notification of next of kin. The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office is expected to confirm his identity in the coming days.

Investigators are still working to determine the circumstances that led to the shooting. Officials have not commented on a possible motive but confirmed that the case remains an active investigation.

Camden Family Charged in Murder of Missing Deptford Township Man

CAMDEN, N.J. — Authorities say a Camden man and two members of his family have been charged in connection with the murder and dismemberment of Harold “Hal” Miller Jr., a 48-year-old Deptford Township man reported missing in June.

According to Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay and Camden County Police Chief Gabriel Rodriguez, 41-year-old Everton Thomas faces first-degree murder, desecration of human remains, and tampering with evidence. His wife, Sherrie Parker, 41, and son, Deshawn Thomas, 22, are each charged with desecration of human remains and tampering with evidence.

Investigators say Miller was last seen entering a home on the 2600 block of Baird Boulevard in Camden on June 12, 2025. Surveillance recorded a single gunshot moments later, and Miller was never seen leaving. The same cameras allegedly captured Everton Thomas moving Miller’s car, which was later found abandoned in Pennsauken.

Detectives also learned that Parker and Deshawn Thomas purchased a chainsaw, containers, trash bags, and cleaning supplies shortly after Miller disappeared. Additional footage reportedly showed Everton and Deshawn making trips to dumpsters with bags and containers.

Forensic testing confirmed blood found inside the home matched Miller’s DNA. Everton Thomas fled to Canada but was arrested at the Port of Buffalo after re-entering the U.S. on September 8, while Parker and Deshawn were arrested in Camden.

Authorities continue searching for Miller’s remains and urge anyone with information to contact Camden County Prosecutor’s Office detectives.

Ilene H. Damron, 99, Faithful Servant and Beloved Matriarch, Passes Away

Ilene H. Damron, age 99, passed away on September 6, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. Born August 23, 1926, she lived nearly a century marked by faith, service, and family devotion. She now joins her Lord and Savior, along with many family members who preceded her—including her twin.

A member of the “Greatest Generation,” Ilene and her late husband, Milton Damron, embraced a Christ-centered marriage that lasted 63 years. As young adults at the University of Kentucky in the 1950s, they were baptized together at Porter Memorial Baptist Church, beginning a lifelong mission of teaching Sunday School and spreading the gospel. Their shared ministry brought many people to faith.

Over the years, Ilene and Milton’s lives took them from Key West to Montana and finally to the Carolinas, where they enjoyed sunsets, square dancing, and community service. Ilene was known for her natural beauty, boundless energy, and enthusiasm for health and wellness. She loved spending time with her daughter, Rheba, and granddaughter, Melita, creating lasting memories on shopping trips and family gatherings.

Ilene is survived by her daughter, Rheba Roten; granddaughter, Melita Murray (Lee); great-granddaughter, Taylor Leigh Murray; and a large circle of relatives and friends who regarded her as a mentor, confidant, and best friend.

Camilla C. Boost, Longtime Salem Volunteer and Avid Traveler, Dies Peacefully

Camilla C. Boost, a beloved longtime Salem resident known for her community service, lifelong learning, and love of travel, died peacefully surrounded by her children. She was born in Heidelberg, Germany, to Dr. Robert and Mathilda Stadler, graduated high school a year early, and went on to earn her degree from Heidelberg University.

In 1953, at a masquerade ball, Camilla met Fritz Boost. The couple married the following year after emigrating to the United States and making Salem their home. She worked at Moore Business Forms before devoting herself to family life and decades of volunteer service.

Camilla’s dedication to education was evident in her volunteer work at McKinley Elementary School, Auburn, and later Keizer Elementary libraries. Even in retirement, she spent Saturday mornings at the Salem Public Library and regularly assisted at election polling stations. She and her husband were familiar figures around Salem on their tandem bicycle and at local swimming spots.

An avid traveler, Camilla explored Europe extensively and took 29 cruises throughout the Caribbean and Pacific. Known for her voracious reading and knitting skills, she was rarely without a book or a cat on her lap.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and later resided at a retirement home in Mt. Angel. Camilla is survived by her sons Mike and Ron (Stacy) and her grandchildren, Adam and Zeke.

A private interment will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Salem Friends of Felines or the Salem Public Library.

Remembering Hector Brual: A Life of Service, Friendship, and Quiet Strength

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Hector Brual, who died this afternoon after several months of illness. True to his private nature, Hector kept his struggle quiet, spending his final moments surrounded by family in Chicago, including his son Phil.

Hector’s influence reached far beyond his immediate circle. During his time at Gallaudet University, he served as Vice President alongside then-SBG President Tim, playing a vital behind-the-scenes role during the Deaf President Now movement. Known for his generosity and dedication, he was a steady force in every project and friendship he undertook.

In later years, Hector became part of the “Lucky Seven,” a close group of friends who shared countless adventures and supported one another through life’s ups and downs. The group mourned the loss of member Daniel Smith last fall, and now they grieve Hector’s passing, finding comfort in the bonds they built.

Hector’s legacy is one of loyalty, humility, and kindness. Whether visiting friends, hosting them in the Philippines, or standing by their side during pivotal moments, he gave selflessly. Those who knew him remember his generosity, his humor, and his unwavering support.

Though he preferred to stay out of the spotlight, Hector Brual’s impact was profound. His life reminds us that real leadership and friendship often happen quietly—one act of service at a time. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit of devotion and friendship will continue to guide those he touched.
